As a deaf person and a deaf sensitivity reader there are a lot of parts for shoko character that bother me. Not even her character, but how we are in the 5th book and she has very little dialogue. That her “friends” just stand around her speaking. She’s not actually included into the conversation until they remember she exists. To which she gives a one word answer. Not to mention the consistency of “shoko? Shoko?? Shoko??? Oh yeah I guess she wouldn’t hear me. “ k. Yall bullied her for being Deaf then forget that she’s Deaf so easily.
Book 5 very loosely drops the “disabled” reasoning around more often. Which isn’t great. Their old teacher coming in again. And blaming “that deaf girl” as the reason everything was so hard on everyone else. K.
I’ll leave this review with a direct quote. Page 51 “ there are a lot of people out there like that- people who think it’s OK to abuse their status and be a burden on others.”
Some of the things ALL of these characters say about shoko makes me question the authors intent for deaf representation.
