this is a book very much of its time. genuinely frightening, full of anguish, and deeply horrible at its own heart. the writing is clumsy at times; reaching for a poeticism that feels dishonest. the plot also got a little clunky—as soon as everything became clear, something really stupid happened. oh well. overall, a good literary read with a lot of good for thought!
