The Surrogate by Tania Carver

3.0

The main trigger warning for this novel should be baby cruelty. The story moves at a brisk pace and it's arguably well-written, if not a bit cliched for a police procedural, but reading the perpetrator's thoughts on babies and how those babies are being treated is what makes my stomach churn. And I don't even like newborns that much.

Despite being one of the protagonists, I can't sympathize with Marina Esposito as a character. She feels like an egotistical person, being mad and forever blaming her love interest for not being able to be at her side when the said love interest is at a crime scene because someone's being murdered (and she KNOWS about it albeit later, so why the butthurt??). I don't know. She feels like a caricature. I prefer Anni, the female detective in Brennan's team. She just feels more layered and not annoying.

Probably will read some more of this series since I already have around 2 or 3 of them in my library. Let's see.
