Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee
5.0
as lady gaga once said “talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, showstopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique”
“Expectations are a funny thing,” Wen said. “When you’re born with them, you resent them, fight against them. When you’ve never been given any, you feel the lack of them your whole life.”
The Green Bone Saga is an urban fantasy series that follows the Kaul family. The Kauls are one of two crime syndicates that control the island of Kekon, the only place that produces rare jade, which grants those with the training and heritage superhuman abilities. Green Bone families like the Kauls are primarily involved in commerce and the everyday upkeep of the districts under their protection. When the simmering tension between the Kauls and their greatest rivals erupts into open violence in the streets, the outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones and the future of the world itself.
I started reading this series early this year, and the final book came out just last week. It took me a while (because it's a 700+ page book), but I finally finished it!!
This is one of the few series that I've read that got consistently better and better with each book. Jade City was a three-star read, Jade War a four-star, and Jade Legacy was amazing!! One of the best books I've read all year and one of the best finales I've ever read.
This series is a drama (kind of like a soap opera at times?) following a dysfunctional family, but if the family was the mafia. And even though it is an adult fantasy series, it's definitely an easy one to get into. The world is not that hard to understand, and because it's mostly character-based, I was never confused with what was going on, which my lack of brain cells really appreciate
