Cain asks why extroversion is so key to professional and personal success in the United States when there are so many examples of very successful and influential introverts. Although she does mention many studies to illustrate and highlight her theories concerning introversion, most of her argument is framed around anecdotes of individuals. While that makes the book more accessible, it doesn’t give the strength to her argument one would expect to enact change; in fact, Cain acts as if pointing out the benefits of introversion should make them self-evident. As an introvert, I appreciate that introversion is getting the respect it deserves, but she fails to prescribe a way for extroverts to be more inclusive; she piggy-backs on everyone else’s advice of explaining how introverts can adapt to an extroverted society. “Quiet” is a comforting read for introverts, even if it falls short of making an impact on how they are viewed/treated by society.
