Um yeah okay I was always going to read this since it’s technically in the Kvothe series, but I’m glad it was short. Not my jam. It was just too weird for me. I felt frustrated that literally nothing was happening. And the illustrations of Auri bugged me too. I know she’s small and doesn’t eat much in her scavenger lifestyle, but her depictions as SUPER skinny with a huge head and giant perfect hair felt very Barbie to me. I’m not surprised it was a male illustrator. There’s an author’s note at the end where Rothfuss points out all the things wrong with this story (only one character, no dialogue, not really much of a plot), and I found myself heartily agreeing with him. His friends and readers and even his publisher clearly liked it enough, but this just wasn’t for me. That’s okay.
