This series is deliciously structural.  DeConnick has this way of taking the patterns of folklore and creating something strange and beautiful.  These aren't vivid characters in the way that we get to know them as people; they are explorations of the roles in fairy tales, icons, and symbols.  It doesn't make them flat, but it
