Nostalgia can only get you so far. I read a number of MacLean's books as a kid in the 1970's, but not this one. I didn't care much for the narration, which didn't help, and the plot has holes you could drive a nuclear submarine through. Some nice historical detail and the naval stuff is pretty solid, but it's not one of his better efforts.
