Shoe Dog by Phil Knight

3.0

(listened as audiobook)

What's it about?
Phil Knight tells the story of the creation of Nike, from when he first started importing cheap Japanese running shoes in 1964 to when Nike went public in 1980. The book can be pretty personal and revealing - rather than focusing on just the business, Knight digs into his personal relationships with his family, employees, partners and competitors. He doesn't shy away from being colorful or revealing less than flattering aspects of himself.

What did I think?
I liked the book. I could emphasize with Phil Knight at times given his introverted nature and his love of running. The story can be very engaging and gripping. You know that it will turn out well, but Knight does a good job of bringing things alive and making you care. That being said, I didn't get a great sense of Knight's passion or sense of mission. He must of had it of course, but most of the time it seemed like he was making a go of Nike because he didn't want to do anything else and didn't want to lose.
