The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

5.0

I picked this book up in the fantasy section of the library and while there are elements of fantasy throughout I don't think i can categorically be labelled as such.

The story follows an unnamed protagonist revisiting his childhood home following a funeral. While there he starts thinking about Lettie Hempstock, a girl who claimed the pone behind her house was actually an ocean. A girl he hasn't thought about in a long time.

Neil Gaiman writes so beautifully; I felt I was part of the story not just reading it. Once I started this book I couldn't put it down, not only because I was hooked from the first page but because I felt it should be experienced in once sitting. If not for certain scenes (no spoilers) I think it would have made an excellent book for a child (10+) to read; it is hauntingly beautiful.

I felt overwhelmed (in a good way!) when I finished this book; almost like I didn't want it to end. Trying to explain to others why they should read this book other than because of how amazing it was is hard; unless you've read it you can't explain the impact it has on you. This is a book that will always stick in my mind, a one that I would revisit when I need reminding of the innocence of childhood and the baggage that comes with being an adult.
