Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor
5.0
Muse of Nightmares. The perfect sequel to Strange the Dreamer. I seriously can't believe it took me this long to finally read these books. If you haven't read Strange the Dreamer yet, FULL DISCLOSURE that this will have spoilers for that, as all sequels reviews or synopsis will. So get outta here if you haven't read Strange the Dreamer yet.
Muse of Nightmares picks up right where Strange the Dreamer left off, with the stand-off between Minya and Lazlo. Minya's rage has built even more since Lazlo showed, and she does all she can to use Sarai to her advantage to get Lazlo to do what she wants him to. But Ruby, Sparrow, and Feral are all on edge, believing that Minya has now gone too far. Incapacitating Minya, the group has bought themselves some time to figure out what to do. But beings from the past will come to haunt them, in memory and physically. Will the group of godspawn be able to come to peaceful terms with the humans, or will all hell break loose again?
I really enjoyed the chapters telling Kora and Nova's story. I wasn't really sure at first what the significance was, besides giving Korako a back story, and kind of explaining why Wraith was still around. But I thought it was really cool how it all came together. I just wish that things had happened a little bit quicker, the main things happened in the last 1/4 of the book. But that's really the only criticism I have for this book. As I said in my review for Strange the Dreamer, I absolutely love Laini Taylor's writing style, it flows really nicely and she paints some really interesting and vivid pictures. Her characters are well developed and even though the main characters didn't do a ton of growing in this book, the side characters did, which I think is just as important. I was surprised with Minya's part in all of it, and what happened with her by the end. I wasn't expecting anything that happened in this story, partly because I never read the synopsis before starting it. It's something I tend not to do when it's a sequel of a book that I just finished.
I really enjoyed the story, Lazlo and Sarai are a cinnamon roll love, and they strive for something that everyone should in their relationships. The innocence between them and the slight intimate scenes weren't over the top, which I totally appreciated. I love that there are still young adult stories out there that don't feel the need to oversexualize scenes, because not ALL young adults are like that or like reading that stuff. It puts a more realistic perspective to the characters in my opinion.
I would highly recommend both Strange the Dreamer and Muse of Nightmares. The story was unlike anything else I personally have ever read, and I loved the uniqueness of it. The concepts that were brought in, especially in Muse of Nightmares was something that kind of took me for a loop at first, but ended up making so much sense I can't really imagine the story without it. There are enough twists and turns to keep the story interesting, but the action and important parts are a bit slow to get into. But once you're there, it's totally worth it!
I really hope that there is a spin-off series or at least book to these, as it left it in a spot that they could come back to. It would be interesting to see the journey that could take place like the one that was described in the end, and many different directions it could go in.
