Russian Olive To Red King by Kathryn Immonen, Kathryn Immonen

4.0

Kathryn and Stuart Immonen take artistic risks in this unusual graphic novel about a woman (Olive) whose plane crashes, and the man (Red) she leaves behind in the city. The first half is gorgeously illustrated by Stuart Immonen and reads more like a conventional comic but with outstanding use of colour. The second half is more experimental, featuring an extended monologue/essay/poem from Red, mostly recounting memories of previous lost. Red is a believable, human character, although I wished we'd had more context on who he was before Olive's disappearance, and I think I might have appreciated more time in Olive's head.
