⠀for once in my life, i’m rendered speechless. this was fast paced and intoxicating. somehow, though, i’m left wanting more.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀” the only thing crueler than a cage so
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ small that a bird can’t fly is a cage so
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ large that a bird thinks he can. “

things i really enjoyed:

❥ ┊the style.
⠀⠀⠀⠀the perspective this novel is written in is the reason i picked this book up in the first place. this is the first time i’ve ever seen a book written in second perspective and i must say that it was done well. sometimes you forget that you aren’t the one joe is actually speaking too.

❥ ┊the story.
⠀⠀⠀⠀every time i picked this up, i couldn’t put it down. even if nothing was really happening, you knew something was about to happen so you couldn’t put the book down. i didn’t see a lot of the plot coming and i only guessed the ending because i was being a smarties. kepnes‘ imagination surely went wild and it paid off.

things i thought were... okay:

❥ ┊the characters.
⠀⠀⠀⠀by no means will any of these characters go down in history. i’m extremely fascinated with joe and his characterization. i think caroline kepnes did a really good job with the idea of him. he’s absolutely bonkers (just like this book) and jUST LIKE THIS BOOK you can’t help but to find a deep interest in hi. beck, on the other hand, was rather annoying as was every single one of her friends. the side characters were fairly underdeveloped and really only had about two personality traits. it would’ve been nice if they were at least a little enjoyable, lmao. the cast wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t outstanding.

things i didn’t enjoy:

❥ ┊the writing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀i know what you’re thinking: i already praised the writing earlier. yes, but here me out. so many fucking run on sentences and weird ass stylistic choices. i understand the writing was supposed to mimic thought processes but that doesn’t mean it didn’t get confusing or annoying. there are more ‘ands’ in this book than anything i’ve ever seen. the writing wasn’t bad! just... a bit annoying.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀overall, this was good and very addicting. i can’t decided on a rating because i’m torn between finding that the ending suited the unicorns and rainbows. also, i really liked this but feel that some parts fell flat. i probably won’t read the sequel because i’m satisfied with this. yeah, i want to know what happens but i don’t want to ruin this.

disclaimer: i’m sure you know by now but i feel like this should be said... this novel is pretty vulgar. i personally wasn’t offended / bothered by it but there is a handful of unpleasantries. before going into this book you should be aware that joes mind and behavior is not for everyone.
