Cassidy Blake lives a pretty paranormal life. Her parents are ghost-hunters after all and love sharing all things historically spooky. But more than that Cassidy can actually see ghosts. She even has a ghost best friend Jacob! Cassidy was in an accident that nearly killed her and afterward, she's had the ability to see the veil and briefly cross to the other side finding ghosts who have been trapped. And Jacob has been with her ever since, freely crossing between the veil and the living world. When Cassidy's parents become the hosts of a travel show where they will visit some of the most haunted cities around the world Cassidy is very excited, but also nervous about the amount of ghost activity she'll be surrounded by. Their first stop, one of the most haunted cities in the world - Edinburgh, Scotland. Once they arrive Cassidy meets a peculiar girl who appears to see Jacob and after a scary run-in with a not so friendly ghost Cassidy wonders might be switching her casual ghost run-ins for something a little bit different.
I loved this book so much! It's a middle-grade novel with a wonderful middle-schooler protagonist and her charming ghost best friend. Reading this as a 26 year old I was enchanted and could only imagine how much middle school me would have loved a story as captivating as this one. Victoria Schwab is one of my favorite authors and coming out of her adult novels to middle grade I loved seeing how adaptable her writing was for a younger audience. This book is perfect for lovers of all things spooky and scary, but who wants those things to stay on the more mild side.
