Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho
4.0
Truly a delightful historical fantasy. I can't comment on the historical accuracy but nothing stuck out to me. The take on faerie was slightly different from any I've seen before, and I really appreciated the way the author handled racism, which ended up playing a large role in the story.
This wasn't quite on the level of Jonathan Strange (which it is oft compared to) in terms of sheer depth of worldbuilding, haunting echoes of the supernatural, philosophical consideration, etc. But that doesn't make it bad. It's the perfect way to spend an afternoon.
