Saving Alex: When I Was Fifteen I Told My Mormon Parents I Was Gay, and That's When My Nightmare Began by Joanna Brooks, Alex Cooper

5.0

“But as I discovered, these are things the mind does to protect itself. When there is nowhere to go, it creates new places of its own where it can hide.”

Alex tells her very religious parents she’s gay, and they send her away to be “cured” of her homosexuality. Alex’s bravery, and how she fought not only to gain back her own rights, but fought for the rights of others and continues to do so is truly harrowing. She also cited her sources, which helped her credibility. The fact this is true, it happened to Alex, and it continues to happen again and again breaks my heart. This book helped me to understand my own sexuality when I read it sophomore year (2018).
