This book didn’t secure my four stars until the very end. The resolution was perfect to me and skillfully accomplished ending a book without everything being wrapped up in a neat bow. This book has heavy themes (TW: suicide), but I thought they were handled well. Phoebe’s mental health experience is similar to some mental health issues I’ve experienced, so I found this different portrayal of suicidal ideation to be realistic and relatable. The characters are flawed and the bride, Lila, is borderline unlikable, but honestly that made me like her. I loved the Rhode Island setting and thought it was captured beautifully. The plot dragged in the middle for me, but the beginning and end made up for it. This wasn’t as funny as some reviews made me believe it would be, but it was a thoughtful depiction of suicidal ideation and reclaiming joy. I’m glad this was one of my last seasonal reads of the summer!
