I finished this absolutely fascinating book today about Frances Glessner Lee. She helped to form what we know today as forensic science.
It never fails to amaze me how hard the world makes it for a woman to have an idea and bring it to fruition. She had amazing ideas and if not for her independent wealth we would not have a lot of the systems we do today in this area. To be quite honest, this book made me hate Harvard a lot. How she had to come up against men who only liked it when it was their idea, and dismisher as bored, rich, or stuborn at any chance.
I never get emotional over books, but this one got me. The fact that she literally dedicated her life and her own money to try to better the world and was only met with obstacle after obstacle. Only because men decided she wasn't educated enough in their opinion. How frustrating that we let pieces of paper tell us how much a person can change the world for the better.
I urge you to please read this.
