Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh

5.0

Unpopular opinion, I actually liked this book. Yes it was disgusting but not in an unreasonable way. The setting and the characters gave reason for the crazed and disgusting descriptions. Fear of god is super interesting in this book and I was engaged in not only the plot but in the characters and their lives. All of Moshfegh's work is very similar, though the settings are extremely different, so I wouldn't recommend this book if you didn't like her other work. BUT if you like anything she's written, this is def a book for you.
the cannibalism came STRONG, but I do think it made sense in the story.
I think Moshfegh likes to write about the insane to examine the similarities that all humans have, the internally-questioned beliefs and emotions. To me, her writing is a way to examine larger human principles in small bits of wild comedy. I will forever love her work (this is the 5th piece of hers I've read; out of 6).
