I love this book. I love everything about it. I love the characters. I love the plot. I love the setting.
This was the perfect urban fantasy, the mix of mysticism and mundane. The myths of Polish folklore set in the Chicago streets. I found that creatures immigrating like humans did to escape persecution a fascinating way to bring Slavic folklore into the urban setting. It made perfect sense to me. It felt realistic.
However, while I found the setting to be amazing. It was the characters that really did it for me. The book rotates POVs between the three main characters, Dimytr, Ala, and Nico. For such a short story, there's a great deal of character development. They have their own pain and their own secrets. Throughout the book, their trust in each other grows, creating friendships that become even stronger bonds.
My only complaint is that the book isn't long enough. I need more of this world and of the characters.
