Footprints: In Search of Future Fossils by David Farrier

challenging dark informative slow-paced

4.25

A very novel perspective on climate change and the deleterious damage that human activity is wreaking on the planet.

As the key to this novel perspective, the book is written by David Farrier, a Professor of Literature and the Environment at the University of Edinburgh. I had never considered the power of creative literary expression of climate change before. However, Farrier's highly descriptive narrative, use of imagery and storytelling truly bring to life the tragedies of human-induced environmental damage. One chapter that particularly sticks in my mind is on the centuries-long degradation of a single plastic bottle, until sealife unfortunately succumbs to its fragments.

I would note that the book is highly detailed and shocking in parts, which I feel is both a strength and a weakness. This detail is a compelling call to action, both for individuals and as a society; however, it also makes it quite an intense read! So I'd recommend reading it in digestible chunks.
