She Gets the Girl by Alyson Derrick, Rachael Lippincott

4.0

4.2 stars. It’s an adorable lesbian YA rom-com that Netflix would totally eat right up. I love the “dating coach” trope, as it’s so similar to the (also cute) “fake dating” trope, and the book executes it well. It’s still pretty formulaic—most rom-coms are in my opinion—but it’s lovely to read, especially for the character backstories. I liked the mentions of Molly’s Korean and Polish heritage, including her mom’s complicated relationship with her Korean identity. And Alex’s difficult relationships with her alcoholic mother and absent girlfriend are heart-wrenching in a way that really adds depth to her story. All in all, this was a good read.

Side note, if you’ve read Gideon The Ninth, the FMC Alex is like if you put the soul of Gideon Nav into the body of Coronabeth Tridentarius and put her in a cute college AU. Which I love! So dang cute.
