Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne

3.0

As a coincidence, I started reading Carrie Fishers autobiography at the same time who mentioned their parents friend being the director of the “Oscar Winning '' film adaptation of around the world in 80 days. It was directed by Mike Todd. It was a fun little adventure, one that you could read to a kid and have them keep up, the action is swift and light-hearted, and the ending feels earned and like a brilliant payoff. If you want a casual read that appeals to the inner child, this would work wonders.

Otherwise, I only don’t rate it higher as the relatively short book simply didn’t appeal to me. Traveling with the dynamics left me feeling that the details of culture could have been deeper, or less stereotypical at some parts, with the respect good for its time, to a modern pallette it still can have moments that feel . Likewise the constant catching up by their police pursuit was just a tad too repetitive for me to find much enjoyment in it. The characters, sweet, wholesome, an easy read IF you enjoy the travelling parts of any novella. Don’t like train rides and new places? This won’t be the book for you.
