Seven Rabbits by Timothy King

5.0

First, I'd like to thank Timothy King for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review and allowing me to be a part of Tim's Terror Team. What an incredible piece of writing from a debut author!

You'll almost feel bad, until you remember what they did...

Seven Rabbits is a fantastic multi-perspective horror novel that walks the line of extreme/splatterpunk, while throwing in elements of grief and difficult to swallow situations. I always love extreme horror with a solid storyline and boy, did Timothy King deliver with this one.

If Scream had a baby with the visual components of Mandy and The Purge, with intertwined elements of your favorite revenge films, Seven Rabbits would be the outcome. It's a vivid story— raw and real. The story primarily focuses on a group of star football players who take part in some absolutely volatile and exploitative events in their small town of Tall Oaks. Ranging from bullying and harassment to full on sexual assault, these outwardly charming and "good" young men— are actually depraved and severely disturbed.

On the team's annual retreat to an isolated cabin, the boys think it's going to be just another trip full of drugs, alcohol, and chill— but instead, a gore fest ensues and seven very angry rabbits have arrived to the cabin in the name of vengeance.

And a slaughterfest it becomes.

While the book does focus on sexual assault, violence against women, and suicide— it's intertwined into the novel with such compassion. There were a few pages where I teared up, where I was extremely angry, and sometimes rightfully uncomfortable. King writes these uneasy situations with thoughtfulness and care, while also bringing real life problems with our justice system to the forefront. These terrible events happen every day, and the book does a great job at acknowledging the ”jock gets away with everything in a small town" trope. On the other hand, as dark as it may sound, I found myself rooting for the seven rabbits time and time again. It's about time we get a new horror novel that absolutely destroys sick, perverted people. I'm all in.

Seriously— what a page turner. I just know this book is going to spark conversation when it releases this Easter. So, mark your calendars for 3/31/24 because you're in for a wild ride with the Seven Rabbits!
