A Fate Inked In Blood by Danielle L. Jensen
adventurous
fast-paced
2.0
I had actually been incredibly invested in the story at the beginning. When we were learning about children of the gods and how their powers manifested, the lore of the world and when there was hope for characters in their complexities.
I still think that the characters are at least motivated and can be both interesting and with deeper thoughts than their surface level, however, the main chunk of the book seems to be incredibly repetitive. Even as they ventured through trials and across landscapes, it felt as though much of the same bridges were being crossed. Even the powers of the main cast lost their magic as we get nothing new from them. You can only see a weapon so many times before it starts to feel less special.
Freya, who seemed a caring and adept fighter, needed to be saved time and time againyet at some point panics declaring that she has to do everything alone, despite having not been by herself during any of her trials, it also doesn't really lead anywhere and felt very jarring. I know that she had been feeling abandoned by her family, but at this point she hadn't had the revelation that she deserved better than the way her family had been treating her, and again, people had been rallying around her as much as possible by their own choice . There was a lot of wanting things and denying herself them in the next page, and sadly all but one twist was more than a little predictable. Had the story kept its intrigue in the middle I think this would have been much higher rated.
