Greek Myths: A New Retelling by Charlotte Higgins, Chris Ofili
5.0
In this delightful new compendium of Greek Myths, Charlotte Higgins weaves a gorgeous retelling of the tales of gods and heroes, and does so in the most literal sense. The framing device of each chapter is a famous woman from mythology working at her loom and depicting different episodes that are thematically related to her and to each other. This choice is fascinating and makes for a great expedient to centre the stories on the female characters. Where you would usually find a chapter named after Perseus or Heracles, here you get Athena, Helen and Circe, to name a few, depicting the stories of fellow women and, by association, men. It doesn’t feel any less authentic or more pandering, if anything it’s a fun twist from the traditional style, but it still keeps the purpose of an anthology intact, that of being a comprehensive collection of mythical stories extracted from the Classics, from Homer to Virgil, from Aeschylus to Ovid. A great resource as well as a very enjoyable read.
