His to Love by Elena H. Covens

4.0

There is yet to be a pirate book that I don't enjoy at least in some way, and this is easily among my favourites. I love this book because it is such a short, sweet, almost nostalgic read. Despite it being brand new to me I felt like it was a story I had been told my whole life (please do not read this book to kids, it is 🔥). The nostalgic vibes were reminiscent of stories like The Chronicles of Narnia or the show Once Upon a Time, though that could be because I'm rewatching it right now. It was very apparent that the author got pieces of inspiration from a lot of different places and while those inspirations may appear different to different people, I loved feeling like I could relate something in the story to another piece of literature or media that I love. It especially gave me A Series of Unfortunate Events vibes with the breaking of the fourth wall as the author spoke directly to the reader. At first, I didn't know how I felt about that but as the story progressed I found it more charming.

I absolutely loved to revelation of Blood Beard's identity It was honestly something I should have seen coming and I did a little but never gave it enough thought to be a fully formed idea until it was happening in front of me. I found myself getting excited at the possibilities of how the story could end with him in the mix and watching him and Flynn butt heads was extremely amusing. Speaking of Flynn, he accepted the fact that he's a storybook character was too fast. If there is one thing about this book I think could have used improvement it would be to add at least a little smidge of conflict when that reveal happened. I have never seen a man so pussy-whipped by a woman that he can just accept something like that and move on 😂.

I felt that there were slight inconsistencies throughout the book and some repetitive language in the dialogue but it was never something big enough to take me out of enjoying the story. I can see the style of writing in this book being something you either love or you hate. It's probably not for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to receive a free eARC copy of this book and I can't wait to see Lucas and Levi's story continued in the next one!
