"[...] she could pretend that we were nothing more than old friends. But our eyes were in each other. Entangled. Entwined with memories and intimacies. And I ached for what might have been."

Out of every hero or villain from the Arthurian legend, I never cared much for Lancelot, but Giles Kristian drew me into this book, into Lancelot's life, battles and heartache like the moon draws the tide.

I appreciate that there is a good mix between historical accuracy (as much as we can for an Arthurian legend retelling), original sources, and the more famous and later texts that influence the more popular ideas of Arthur, and Lancelot, and everyone else.

The prose was beautiful and the fighting scenes were gut-wrenching in details in the best way. The lingering feelings between the characters shaped the story as much as the battles. And finally, I really love the small detail that Lancelot is not named until Lady Nimue does so, as if by telling his name, claiming him, this is when his story starts.

Considering the ending of that book, I'm curious to read the next one!
