I read Ninth House for the first time when it published in 2019 and I chose to re-read it in time for the sequel. I think I loved it even more the second time I read it. While there is still quite a bit of info dumping at the beginning, it didn't feel as heavy. I also think I noticed more of the Jewishness and the little nuances throughout the story. I enjoyed how the book was split up and I think the seasonal time periods really kept everything organized. I still really like these characters and I think I relate to Dawes and her motherly, caring tendencies so much more now. Darlington still has my heart and I feel like I understand more about him. Alex was so complex and understanding all of her struggles only made me like her more. This book is full of dark academia, with fantasy and mystery elements stirred right in there. The modern world of Yale University mixed with magic and darkness was compelling and captivating. The idea of the different societies was so cool and it felt immersive. I love Leigh Bardugo's storytelling capabilities and this one is a must read. It's still one of my favorites and it's just a rich and hearty book you can't help but savor. I'm so excited to read book two and dive back into this story and these characters.
