The premise of this book is very silly and immediately falls apart once you put an ounce of deeper thought into it, however I wanted to keep an open mind to enjoy the journey of Mateo and Rufus. For the most part it was sweet, with dumb teenagers doing dumb teenage things and has a whole lot of heart and emotion. Rufus’s dialogue did feel very awkward and forced (the overuse of the words “mad” and “dope” were pretty cringe) however I found Mateo’s character to read as much more natural. Overall, enjoyable but would love a deeper look at the whole Death Cast thing - maybe it’s in the prequel, I guess I’ll find out.
