Beloved by Toni Morrison

3.0

Haunting and beautiful, but at times so poetic it's hard to follow what's presented to the reader. Due to its grounding in US history and slave ownership, the narrative is both so real that at times it's painful to read, but at others so impressionistic that it feels like you're experiencing a character's fever dream.

Morrison's mastery of poetic imagery is well on display and I'm glad to have read Beloved, even if, for me, it wasn't the most enjoyable read.
