Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins
4.0
I love Tom Robbins' sense of humor and writing style. I love the fact that there are times I feel like he's looking at us with a wink and a smile, saying "look how good I am at this" as he writes. That said, I didn't love Skinny Legs. It most certainly had its moments. I enjoyed Ellen Cherry and Boomer, and loved the concept of Turnaround Norman. I enjoyed the discourse on the middle-east. But, I felt like this book went a little long. There were passages that didn't move the story forward, and I felt like the anthropomorphic characters (Spoon, Sock, Stick, Conch, and Bean Can) sorta disappeared in the 3rd act. It took me quite some time to finish this book, as I do often take long gaps when reading fiction, but I think the gaps also had to do with enjoyment. When something really grabs me I tend to steamroll through it. I didn't really catch the significance of the 7 veil analogy, which could be due to me taking to long to finish the story. Either way, I know there are Robbins fans who love this book and consider it his best. I prefer Jitterbug Perfume and Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates. Those are my two favorites, so if you're new to Robbins, I would recommend starting with Jitterbug.
Also, I thoroughly enjoyed Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas, though I know some other Robbins fans aren't as big on that one.
Overall, Skinny Legs is full of excellent prose, some very funny jokes and thoughtful commentary on the world. I just felt like it could have been accomplished in a page count closer to most of his other works.
