A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn

5.0

Such a fun ride! I liked the protagonist Veronica from the very beginning, and was taken by Stoker immediately upon his introduction as well. With a leading pair so charismatic and charmingly at-odds while secretly falling for each other, the author would've really had to screw up for me to dislike this one.

I'm happy to say as well that the revelation of the ~big mystery~ did not disappoint in its hugeness; it's dangerous to tease a big secret in a novel like this since too big a setup can produce an anticlimactic payoff, but in this case the anticipation was warranted. Though the resolution suspended disbelief just a tad, the charm and pace and the stellar leads more than made up for it and earned this book 5 stars from me. Looking forward to more!
