Tolkien has translated three medieval poems in this book, so he is not the genuine author. Alongside these poems he put forth thoughts and explains a whole lot about the medieval world and the poems in great and concise essays.
As for the poems themselves they are beautifully composed in rhymes and alliterative verse. And quite a bit hard to fully understand.
