So, I was gifted this book while I was in the hospital, during a very difficult stay. I think it came to me at the perfect time. Putting to the side for the moment that the illustrations are absolutely stunning (the hardcover has some of the most beautiful sheet music renderings I’ve had the pleasure of seeing) the conversations the boy and his animal friends were exactly what I needed. Yes, some of them are trite (referencing the swans “there’s a lot of frantic paddling underneath”) but it is essentially for children!
I do find it funny/sad though that a lot of the younger generation may not be able to read this beautiful book that I find so dear because of the script it is written in - yet I wouldn’t want to change it for the world! A part of its character would be lost. In any case, all of the stars and the most strenuous recommendation from me. This will not be straying far from my bedside table.
