Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon
- Strong character development? Yes
- Diverse cast of characters? Yes
3.0
I had to take my time to think about my rating & review.
I definitely enjoyed this book, Rivers Solomon blends in so many heavy and important topics so effortlessly. Often, you feel like the author is trying so hard to make you understand what they're trying to say, and often making you feel like they think you're stupid. But Solomon does a great job and discussing these topics without making you feel like they were the sole reasons they wrote the book.
However, on the other end, the pacing was reaaalllyy off. At first, while reading the book, I thought I was missing some pages or like I wasn't paying enough attention, but no, the plot was jumping around. Often I found there were plot holes and I was so confused about how we jumped from the last scene to the new one. I do feel like that took me out of the book. Furthermore, sometimes I felt like it was dragging a bit too much, and other times I felt like we were going too fast.
This was my experience:
10% - okay I don't understand what this book is gonna be about but let me continue
30% - oooh, I see, I see, this is interesting.
60% - okay now I am really liking where this is going, this is fun
70% - okay what? i'm getting a bit bored
90% - okay now I genuinely don't understand wtf is going on, who are these new characters?
100% - I-? what? okay? i dont know what that was.
