The Post-Birthday World by Lionel Shriver

2.0

I watched Sliding Doors, with Gwenyth Paltrow, and I think I liked that better than this. The concept of the book, two alternate outcomes to a life because of one decision, is interesting. There was a bit of repetition in the tales though, each chapter followed similar story lines and the overlap of some events was obvious and a little annoying at times (much like my dislike for stories told from alternate perspectives). The theme was driven in a little hard when the main character wrote a book with the same theme Shriver seemed to be trying to get across. It also seemed a little peculiar that if Irena didn't kiss Ramsey Lawrence was destined to cheat on her, but if she did kiss Ramsey Irena would turn into the person she wanted to be. I have read a fair amount of 'post 9/11 books', I was annoyed by the use of 9/11 in this book. It didn't seem important for the story.
