Before We Say Goodbye by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

3.5

An unexpected reading goal this year has been to finish 'Before the coffee gets cold' series. I started the year with reading book 1 and want to finish the year by reading book 5. With this being the case I think I tried very hard to squeeze book 4 into November and it perhaps dampened my reading experience.

My first impression of this read was that I felt thrust backwards through time, it jumped back to where the third book ended. I was so whip lashed I had to double check that I wasn't reading the novels out of sequence.

While I enjoyed the familiar walls of Funicula Funicula and the warmth of the characters along with theme of goodbye I felt like this novel lacked the philosophical meaning of its predecessors. The most memorable storyline involved the dog, it was heartfelt and special. The other narratives that existed alongside it though are, regrettably, forgettable.

I still stand by the series and will finish off the year with the fifth book, but this novel wasn't the same as the others for me.
