Nayra and the Djinn by Iasmin Omar Ata

4.0

Nayra and the Djinn follows Nayra who is a very stressed-out middle schooler who just wants a break from all the pressure and expectations that have been placed on her by her family. She is also dealing with bullies at school due to being Muslim.

Overall this book is beautifully illustrated and the story of a stressed-out middle-schooler is very real in today's world. Nayra accepting a Djinn into her life who is supposed to help her but just seems to make things more complicated is something else she now has to deal with as it has its own secrets and stresses as well. These two try to navigate 'fixing' Nayra's life while also trying to understand what the Djinn is running from. Things get very tense at times, but the ending of the book makes up for it.

There are parts of this book that I did find confusing. It didn't go into a lot of detail or even really mention much how the djinn worked exactly, and how it would affect Nayra's life. I think this was okay with a middle-grade novel, but in anything older it will not work so well because it does leave you questioning things.
