Shrill by Lindy West

I will admit that I was super aware of who Lindy West was or what she did before reading this book. I'm so glad that I finally decided to check it out from the library after passing it up as my BOTM pick. It was entertaining, laugh-out-loud funny, thoughtful and it talked a lot about the topics I'm interested in: rape culture, the importance of media, body shaming, and internet culture. Lindy also shared with us pieces of her own life, not just as they applied to these topics, but in truly open and personal ways. Reading about the death of her father, for instance, dragged at my feelings and reminded me so much of watching my parents lose their parents.

There were a couple of times that something Lindy wrote made me pause and made me want to think about it more, but even if I didn't 100% agree with everything she wrote here doesn't mean I could justify deducting a star. This was well-written and touching and it's the kind of book I'll start recommending to friends whenever I get a chance. I highlighted quotes and took notes. I don't read very much non-fiction every year, but I'm also certain this was some of the best I read this year.
