I’m giving this one solid 3 stars. Tolstoy intricately weaves together multiple lives and has a talent for writing the inner depths of human experience. There isn’t a single character whose motivations are not intimately explored and there are some chapters and passages that are the pinnacle of great writing. However this book did not need to be this long! I could have cut at least a quarter of the chapters with no despair. Kill your darlings Tolstoy.
