I Should Have Honor: A Memoir of Hope and Pride in Pakistan by Khalida Brohi

5.0

Wow... I want to start this review off by stating that I always feel weird rating memoirs... Usually when I rate a memoir, it's more so on how captivating and how well written the story is. This book was both of those things and more. I felt immediately drawn into Khalida's story. I laughed at her jokes and got angry and upset when she spoke of the injustices the women in her community faced. My heart still aches for Khadija and all the other women that face similar abuse. However, I personally didn't like the praise the author gave her uncle near the end of the book. Although it was a small amount, and I understand that she was likely trying to have the reader put themselves into her uncle's perspective, I think it was an amount too great considering what he did. I can't blame the author as she obviously lived through it... I guess I'm just not as forgiving. Overall, I am so glad I picked up this book. Although it's just one person's story, it provides a great insight into the lives of many girls and people in the same communities that otherwise do not have a voice.
