Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick
4.0
I really enjoyed this book!!! Yay, I've always liked Becca Fitzpatrick's writing and looking at the reviews I didn't want to think that this book was being put down because of people's distaste to the Hush Hush series, but personally I enjoyed it.
"You never know what you're going to have to face, so you'd better be prepared.”
Britt Pfeiffer has always been safe in her life. Going on this trip though will prove that she's willing to be adventurous, especially to her ex-boyfriend who will meet them at their cabin since he is her best friend's brother.
Heading up the mountains, Britt and her best friend get caught up in a drastic storm that leads them to unexpected danger. Stuck in the snow storm with no communication, the gas wouldn't last in the car to keep them warm for very long. They needed to find somewhere else. And when they think they've found their greatest chance of surviving, things don't look too good for them. Their lives are suddenly in danger in the presence of the two men who take them in and there is no where to go.
“Because those four days in the mountains, they changed us."
Seeing Mason again after their brief encounter at the store the day before startles her. But even though Mason is a part of what's going on, Britt gets the feeling that she can get through to him to help. And when things go horribly wrong, she realises she actually needs him to survive the storm up in the catastrophic mountain more than she wishes.
Until she figures out who he really is.
“If I had known things would turn out this way, I would have trained harder. I would have learned to take care of myself."
In this book, yes there was a bit of romance, but it definitely didn't consume the story which was more about survival. It more endeared it and it added a really nice touch to the scary situation that the girls were in and I loved how it played out.
I really liked Britt's character, yes, she could be gullible and naive but at times she was able to think straight and help herself. Not all characters are perfect and even though we may take them as annoying and throw the book across the room in frustration, I didn't get this feeling with Britt even though her thinking could be disliked. She had her moments and I still enjoyed reading this book which I can happily say with 4 stars.
It was a book on survival. And the truth behind people. Who you trust and who you shouldn't. Even if you thought you knew who they were.
And how wrong you can be.
But of course that goes both ways.
"More tongue exercises? Would have thought you'd had enough last night."
"Go to hell."
"Sorry, love, but we're already there.”
Even in Hush Hush, I loved Fitzpatrick's witty comebacks that she gets into the story and I found more in this book too which I loved. Just added a touch of sassiness to the book.
"I can't let go of you, Britt. And I don't want you to let go of me.”
I really enjoyed this book and I'm delighted I did. I love Becca Fitzpatrick's writing. The story was well balanced and the characters were good too. Britt's experience didn't pass without teaching her a few things about life so I found there was definitely character development. It was a different story for a change so I'm glad to have read it.
