New Bones Abolition: Captive Maternal Agency and the Afterlife of Erica Garner by Joy James

1.5

Oof. Pretty sure I'm not the target audience for this one, and I'm not sure who the target audience is, to be honest. Black revolutionaries who are really into theory, I guess, but only the ones the author doesn't call out as Doing It Wrong, which was most of the people I'd ever heard of. (This is likely just me showing off my ignorance.)

Overall, I found the book really frustrating, as it didn't feel like James defined her central terms (such as Captive Maternal!), but was very interested in calling out anyone who put a foot out of line regarding her Revolutionary purity, wanted to rehash the 2016 Democratic Primaries to prove her fave had no flaws and anyone who didn't like him was Wrong On the Internet, and only seemed to actually like activists and thinkers who were safely dead.

Sometimes walking into the middle of an internecine throwdown on a topic you don't know a lot about can be a fun read, but this one mostly baffled me.
