Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

5.0

They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.
Now we rise.

Children of Blood and Bone is a West-African young adult fantasy set in Orïsha. The novel follows Zélie, Tzain, and Amari, Princess and future queen to Orïsha, as they journey to a hidden island before the end of the solstice and is magic is gone forever. There journey is not easy and they run into many obstacles, making them question their journey - especially Zélie.

Tomi Adeyemi focuses on the unjustices towards certain groups of people in society; in this case divîners - Maji's without their magic. One of the other main themes throughout is genocide, referred to as "The Raid", and it explores the pain it caused people then and how that feeling has not withered over time and is still a big part of the divîner community.

The story is told from the perspectives of Zélie, Amari, and Inan, Amari's brother and prince to the throne. Each character is fighter their own battle and demons but each story is interwoven and works so smoothly. I liked that the narrative was deep, meaningful, and thoughtful which kept me engrossed wanting to know more.
I also really enjoyed watching the friendship between Zélie, and Amari grow from disdain to mutual respect, and eventually to friendship.

The worry is with such a hyped book is, "is it going to live up to expectations or leave me feeling disappointed?" Well this one certainly does not do that. It is worth all the hype and all the fantastic reviews and is a must read of 2018. I can not wait for the next installment and Tomi Adeyemi ended it on such a fantastic cliffhanger, albeit it is a little mean making people wait so long.
