The Family Plot by Megan Collins

3.0

I would actually like to give "The Family Plot" 3.5 stars.

This was a very enjoyable book to read. Megan Collins managed to write a fun story, one that ticked a lot of boxes; serial killer mystery, creepy mansion, family secrets, and eery surroundings. The writing is also very well done, descriptive without being overly labored or trite.

The story centers around the reclusive and eccentric Lighthouse (great name) family who live on Blackburn Island, off the coast of Rhode Island. It’s a secluded and moody setting perfect for a mystery involving a string of unsolved serial killings that have been plaguing the island community for decades. The Lighthouses, with their odd obsession for true crime, are the source of much rumor and speculation by the islanders, so much so, that their home is dubbed “Murder Mansion”.

Collins keeps the story flowing nicely with just the right amount of creep factor to keep you turning the pages. It’s not a deep book and it may be just a touch predictable, but I enjoyed it and will seek out other works by this author.

I would classify “The Family Plot” as a perfect travel book; easy enough to follow and intriguing enough to keep you interested.
