This first installment in this manga series is fucking amazing! I have never fallen in love with a manga volume immediately, but this broke the mold. I am absolutely obsessed. I am in love. I need to keep reading. Everything here was perfectly catered to my tastes.
First of all, I love this because the character archetypes are exactly my brand. We have the sunshine, golden retriever-like character. He is sweet and caring and hyper, and I would protect him at all costs. Then we have the soft, shy girl archetype which I am also a sucker for. I look at her, and I want to protect her with everything within me. I know I just said I would protect the sunshine boy, but I have enough love in my heart to want to protect them both. When it comes to her, literally any pain that she feels is pain that I feel, and that means I must stop any and all her pain. She cannot suffer! And then we have the grumpy best friend of the shy girl. She is everything to me. The moment she tried to intimidate the protagonist? I fell in love with her. She is an icon. Finally, we have the protagonist. He is not my favorite archetype, but I’m still weak for him. Mostly because he’s the insecure guy who doesn’t understand why people like him—especially when those are people he really likes—so he just chaotically resists anyone ever saying anything nice about him. That is relatable. That is understandable. I vibe with it.
And then the second layer here is the awe-inspiring levels of YEARNING in this volume. All the characters are interested in different characters, and the tension this creates? Peak content. This is exactly what I want. This is a love square, and it is what I have been waiting for all my life. We have the childhood friend who has a crush on the protagonist. And then we have the protagonist who has a crush on the cute shy girl. And then the cute shy girl has a crush on the childhood friend. And then the shy girl has a grumpy best friend who has a crush on her. Truly, this is a work of art. I know I’m going to suffer because of them, and I am so ready and willing to go through that suffering. I just like intricate, messy relationships like this. Especially because often it means the characters will go the extra mile to show each other how much they care for one another, and I just stan that shit.
In conclusion, this has a perfect set up. My gay ass is going to eat up this series. I’m ready to have a good time. I’m pretty sure my friend recommended this series to me a whiiiiiiile ago, and I completely ignored that recommendation. I am a clown, but I am learning from my clown ways. I am ready to be emotionally devastated by the rest of this series. I cannot wait!
