Only Ever Yours by Louise O'Neill

5.0

trigger warnings for rape, suicide, eating disorders, body image, and bullying.

I have wanted to read Only Ever Yours for a while now, and for #readwomen I decided to finally read it after having it on my shelf for weeks. And I have to say it is not an easy book to read. It is powerful but brutal & intense. It is very uncomfortable & difficult to read at times.

Only Every Yours is an exaggerated reflection of our very own society and its views towards women. It is beauty standards and expectations gone mad. It is about objectification of women - only being there to pleasure men - about being perfect and 'there's always room for improvement'. You cannot be too skinny, or too fat. You cannot be too pale, or too dark. Girls need to keep their emotions in check - they must not cry or be angry. No man likes a hysterical girl, etc etc. This novel is such a reflection of our society it is unreal, yes it is exaggerated but when you look at the themes, it is very much a reflection of society today. A must read.
