Spinning Our Dreams: A Girton Girl's Guide to Fellows in Love by Anne Knight

5.0

This story takes place at Cambridge University in 1880, which is refreshing and different. Faith is applying for Girton College, while working in the kitchens. Spencer is a teacher at the university. He's loved her from afar for two years. She thinks he's rather cold and aloof. Turns out he's just socially awkward and adorable.

She has just a couple days to write some more scholarship letters and he agrees to proofread them to help.

Their relationship turns hot very quickly. I was excited to see the couple use another form of contraception than "french letters". It was heartwarming that they opened up and became so comfortable around each other. I was rooting for them.

There is an element of danger (besides possible pregnancy) in that they are not allowed as employees to fraterinize, and the campus has guards that love to bully, blackmail and incarcerate.

This story reminded me of the vibes, story telling and excellent writing of "Cambridge Fellows Mysteries" by Charlie Cochrane.  Jonty and Orlando's tale starts in 1905. Also, "Death in the Spires" by KJ Charles, which takes place at Oxford about 1895 - 1905-ish, which follows Jem and his six friends.

Anne Knight is an author to watch and I look forward to reading more of her stories!
I received this book as a gift from the author. Opinions are my own.
