One of the main problems I have with this series is that it is too focused on the two main MCs and it doesn’t actually give much depth to the minor characters in the series (although the novellas do make up for this certain problem). I seriously wanted to know more about Marlee, Lucy, Aspen and the back stories of the other supporting characters. These characters played such a huge part in the story and I wanted their presence there to be justified. Personally, prefer it when all/most of the characters have depth and their stories are explained. This usually makes the story more unpredictable and gets more readers interested.
I have also heard a lot of male readers avoid this book mostly because of the covers and the feedback that they hear. You can understand where they come from though. The story and the plot can get quite cheesy in a certain parts. Although the idea of the story is really good, I was a bit disappointed at how short the Rebel scenes are here. It seemed that it was lessened by a whole bunch and the story turned out quite predictable.
BUT DON’T GET ME WRONG!! I did get a heart attack about 50 pages before the end of this book (y’all know what I’m talking about). And just because I need to repeat it: I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE IDEA OF THIS BOOK. You cannot tell me that you weren’t at least intrigued by the plot of it. And don’t tell me you did not get teary eyed and your heart did not break when you read this part of the book:
“Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only ever yours to break anyway.”
I wanted to throw the book and cry until I create my own river of tears. Never mind that I actually thought Mason was actually going to die even though I knew how it was going to end. Even though the book is predictable it will make you think differently.
Celeste Newsome. I think most of us can agree that we absolutely hated Celeste in the majority of the story but, speaking for myself, I loved her in the last book and I actually felt so bad when she got shot at and I cried when America narrated about being with her and their story together. She would have been like that sassy aunt who spoils you but would scare all the mean kids away.
America Singer and Prince Maxon Schreave. Do you love them? BECAUSE I DO! I L-O-V-E them. Kiera Cast somehow made a cliche sounding story not so cliche. This book made me feel that sometimes your Prince Charming is hidden and just waiting to be found. Their relationship just seemed so unique to me and something that I can’t even fathom. You will want to punch, get annoyed and want to strangle Maxon at certain times but you can’t help not loving him. You can’t help falling in love with the prince who only wants a friend, the prince who gets beaten up by his own father and the prince who will always follow his heart and will do what he thinks is right.
I have to admit that the story may seem so cliche but the story actually has more depth than most realize. Especially if you read the novellas. The novellas of this series is something that I would definitely recommend. It completes the story in a way that you probably won’t realize just yet. It adds depth to the supporting characters and you just won’t help to love them more than you already do. If you want to know the characters much better. . . go read them!!
